With a background in dance and gymnastics, Rebekah has always loved the idea of using the physical body as a way of conveying emotion and story. She found her love of physical theatre during her first year of Theatre/Media in 2010 at Charles Sturt University and followed this passion with enthusiasm and tenacity.
While studying Rebekah took on numerous theatrical roles including stage management, make-up design, set and costume design and construction. However, her major focus was in developing her skills as a physical performer. Rebekah performed in several Physical Theatre shows at CSU including ‘The Second Coming’, ‘Into The Shadows’, and ‘No, You Eat it!’ and was selected to perform in ‘Titanomachy’ and ‘On The Shoulders of Giants’- devised physical theatre works created by Masters of Arts Practice students.
Rebekah has also explored circus and contemporary clown. She performed in several acrobatic/clown pieces at the 2012 Catapult – The National Youth Circus and Physical Theatre Festival and her final major work at University was a contemporary Commedia Del Arte piece titled ‘Capriccioso’. Rebekah consolidated her own practice as a physical performer in ‘Capriccioso’ by also taking on the role of Movement Director and facilitating the learning and physical training of her fellow cast members.
While still studying Rebekah sought to extend her performance opportunities beyond CSU. In 2011 she performed in a contemporary dance piece titled ’Talk2Me’, choreographed by dance artist Ailson Plevey. In 2012 extended this relationship performing in ‘Synthesis’ a Physical Theatre piece created by Alison Plevey and director Adam Deusien.
Since graduating from CSU in 2012, Rebekah has continued her practice performing in a roving acrobatic troupe, and returned to showcase her skills at the 2014 Catapult Festival performing acrobatics, and working with Stalker Physical Theatre in premiering the debut performance of ‘Switch’.
Aside from performance, Rebekah has also worked on the 2012 and 2014 Catapult Festivals, and the 2013 Mullumbimby Circus Festival as the Assistant Festival Producer.
In 2012 Rebekah helped establish classes and work as the head circus trainer through the Bathurst PCYC, up until moving to Townsville in 2015, where for 4.5years she worked as the Circus Program Coordinator at La Luna Youth Arts Association, teaching circus classes from 18months - 40+ years, as well as performing in the acrobatic troupe Circo Nova.
Rebekah currently teaches and performs circus and aerials in Townsville.
